Over the course of a little more than a year, I spent about four months overseas as I trekked around Egypt, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. Alas, I figured those days of adventure were over when I started working this past September. Although I love my job, I had resigned myself to the reality that my "vacations" would now be a few three-day weekends a year.
Nope.
Although I never lived out UVA's "work hard, play hard" mantra while I was an undergrad student, it's been my motto for the past four months. I work a lot of hours and so when the work week is "over," I'm doing all I can to maximize the weekend, "play hard," and live a passionate life. Thus, the three-day weekend trips will have to wait, because I'm Hungary for adventure!
Yes, we're headed to Hungary and yes, I'm going to straight up say that pun a million times during our upcoming trip. I've wanted to go to Hungary for a long time (the eventual trip to Egypt was originally a trip to Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia, etc.) and so I'm VERY excited to finally have a chance to throw-down with the Hungarians. I've been plotting a 10ish day trip in April for a while, but while other potential destinations, such as Colombia (too big), Panama (not random enough), Nicaragua (too close to the U.S.), and the Czech Republic (looooong layovers) fell away, Budapest remained. When I found some super cheap flights and saw a number of articles say Budapest should be a top destination in 2011, I pulled the trigger in a Hungarian heartbeat. And after all sorts of Asian love during the past year, it feels really good to get a change of scenery and head back to Europe...especially since Hungary is a whole lot cheaper than the rest of the continent.
Although there are tons of fun details that await planning, we'll probably be chilling in the Hungarian capital for three or so days and then cruising around the rest of the country for another six or seven. Even better, we'll be in Budapest for Amanda's birthday and so I can only imagine that we'll be having some sort of wild and crazy time. Even better, two of our BFFs are already going on the trip (yay!) and any and all others are most welcome.
As always, here are some pictures of the new destination. Bring on the oversized backpacks, $5 hostels, cheap t-shirts, and grungy Euros, because it's almost (not really, still three months away) time to make some priceless memories once again...
